I have some general UX concerns with the email/template editor > Global Styles & Layout pane, but chief among them is that it is not intuitive to get back to the global context once you click on a stripe. Currently, you have to click the stripe x or in two obscure areas of the screen to show the global context (see screenshot). I would suggest that there be some explicit link/button to get back to this context.
